GHS Physician Elected Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association

OXFORD, NC (May 8, 2015) –Granville Health System (GHS) announced that through a highly selective nationwide selection process, Stephan F. Baum, MD has been elected Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA). The Distinguished Fellow is the highest membership honor the APA bestows upon its members. 

“On behalf of the hospital staff, physicians and Board of Trustees, we’d like to congratulate Dr. Baum,” said L. Lee Isley, CEO of Granville Health System. “The dedication and level of care he provides to patients reflects the high standards of the American Psychiatric Association and the quality of care provided at Granville Health System.” 

Dr. Baum was nominated by Michael Lancaster, MD, DLFAPA, Chair of the NC Psychiatric Fellowship Committee and endorsed by the NC Psychiatric Association. His nomination was approved by the APA Membership Committee and voted upon by the APA Board of Trustees. 
“I feel truly honored to obtain this professional recognition from the American Psychiatric Association, which is the predominant professional organization for psychiatrists in North America, although it is international in scope,” said Baum. 

Dr. Baum has been with the Health System for more than 6 years and offers outpatient child/adolescent psychiatry as well as psychopharmacology at Granville Behavioral Health Services in Oxford. The practice offers mental health assessment, treatment, counseling, psychiatric evaluation and medical management for children, adolescents and adults. 
Dr. Baum serves as the Medical Director and physician leader of the practice, working with an additional psychiatrist, Dr. April Welborn, and 3 full-time therapists. 

The Distinguished Fellowship is awarded to outstanding psychiatrists who have made significant contributions to the profession in at least 5 of the following areas: 
Administration
Teaching
Scientific and scholarly publications
Volunteering in mental health
Medical activities of social significance
Community involvement
Clinical excellence

The requirements to be nominated for a Distinguished Fellow include the following: 
Not less than 8 consecutive years as a General Member or Fellow of the APA
Certification by the Board of American Psychiatry & Neurology or the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada, the American Osteopathic Association or equivalent certifying board
Nomination by the local District Branch/State Association
Three letters supporting the nomination from current Distinguished Fellows of the American Psychiatric Association

“This recognition is a great personal honor for me, but it is also a reflection of the quality of care that is provided to our patients at Granville Behavioral Health Services,” said Baum. “I will continue to maintain a high quality of care for our patients in an ever-changing and challenging national medical environment.” 

Dr. Baum received his undergraduate degree from the University of Dubuque (summa cum laude). He graduated from medical school at the University of Iowa and did his residency and internship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also did a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry as well as a fellowship in psychopharmacology at UNC.
