GHS Recognized as Top 10 Hospital for Quality

4/14/2015

OXFORD, NC (April 14, 2015) – Granville Health System (GHS) has been recognized by the NC Quality Center for outstanding performance over a 3-year initiative in patient safety and quality improvement. The System was one of the top 10 performing hospitals in the 116-member North Carolina / Virginia Hospital Engagement Network.

The recognition stems from the Partnership for Patients, a public-private partnership working to improve the quality, safety and affordability of health care. The group is comprised of federal agencies, hospitals, health care organizations, patient organizations and private-public partners. The federal agencies involved include the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Centers for Disease Control and the National Institutes for Health.

The Partnership for Patients was a 3-year national initiative which began in 2012. Its goals were to decrease hospital acquired conditions by 40% and to reduce hospital readmissions by 20%.

A key element of the initiative was the Hospital Engagement Network which mostly consists of state hospital associations. These networks organized hospitals, assisted with resources, solutions and the sharing of best practices.

Granville Health System was part of the 116-member North Carolina / Virginia Hospital Engagement Network. Together, this group had an estimated 4,760 avoided incidents of harm within its member hospitals and 5,354 fewer hospital readmissions. These reductions have resulted in an estimated savings to the health care system of more than $90 million.

“Granville Health System is pleased to be recognized for our enduring commitment to quality care and patient safety,” said CEO L. Lee Isley. "The award is a testament to the continued dedication and hard work of our staff and physicians. Because of the ongoing focus and drive of our Board of Trustees, the hospital remains positioned to provide the very best quality care to our community.”

GHS was recognized as one of the top ten hospitals in the network for results at or above the high performance benchmark in the prevention of hospital acquired conditions. This means that the Health System achieved a 40% reduction or, as is the case for Granville Health System, is exceeding the high performance benchmark for the following conditions:

  • Central line-associated blood stream infections

(0 infections during the initiative)

  • Colon surgical site infections

(0 infections during the initiative)

  • Ventilator-associated events (such as pneumonia)

(0 infections during the initiative)

  • Catheter-associated urinary tract infections

(1 infection during the initiative)

  • Falls with injury

(0 falls during the initiative)

  • Pressure ulcers

(0 infections during the initiative)

  • Obstetric Trauma

(0 incidences during the initiative)

  • Obstetric Hemorrhage

(0 incidences during the initiative)

The Health System was also recognized for exceeding the high performance benchmark in readmission rates. That benchmark was set at 20% reduction for all readmissions to any hospital, for any cause. Granville Health System reduced their rate by nearly 23%.

“The Health System’s Quality Council has worked hard to develop a culture of quality throughout the organization that ensures our patients receive the best care possible,” said Chief Nursing Officer Bill Hughes.

The GHS Quality Council is a Board appointed group dedicated to improving quality and patient safety measures. It is comprised of physicians, staff directors, community members and members of the GHS Board of Directors. The GHS Quality Council led the Partnership for Patients initiative at the Health System.

"Granville Health System has exceptionally committed staff and physicians that do a wonderful job," said L.C. Adcock, Chairman of the GHS Board of Trustees and member of the Quality Council. "This recognition underscores our Board’s vision to support the hospital in this journey in achieving such a high level of consistent quality care and patient safety.”
