Wilton Elementary Students Illustrate How They Are “Living Healthy”
South Granville Primary Care Open House Gallery Draws Many Attendees and Smiles
Granville Health System (GHS) recently announced the winners of the Wilton Elementary School 2012 “Kids Living Healthy” artwork contest at South Granville Medical Center in Creedmoor, North Carolina.
The program is a wellness initiative designed by Granville Health System to encourage students and their families to live healthy lifestyles. Students were challenged to select themes such as nutrition, exercise or other ways to stay healthy and illustrate their ideas through individual pieces of art. Over 300 students took part in the contest.
The judging committee for the contest included Tim Karan, Granville County Commissioner; Korena Weichel, Administrative Services Director for the City of Creedmoor, James Lumpkins; and Shields Blackwell, Director of Granville Education Foundation.
The contest included 3 levels of participation: kindergarten and first grade, second and third grades, and fourth and fifth grades. A number of prizes were awarded through this program, including certificates, ribbons, and gift cards. Winners were announced during the open house gallery showing for students, their families and the community at South Granville Medical Center in May.
The winners included:
First Place Winners: Jessi Ioset (first grade), Sydnie Smith (second grade), Jenna Smith (fourth grade), and Samantha Travis (fourth grade).
Second Place Winners: Jacob Garry (second grade), Gabriela Pleasants, (third grade), Alyssa Garry (fifth grade), and Kailen Craddock (kindergarten)
Third Place Winners: Dexter Hustead (third grade), Amanda Scott (fifth grade), and Caroline Craddock (kindergarten)
“This was a wonderful experience that encouraged our students to be creative and to promote healthy living at the same time,” said Kathy Watkins, who coordinated the project at Wilton.
“The students really enjoyed working on this project,” said Natalie Granaas, art teacher. “They were so excited to see all their pictures displayed at the gallery showing. They did a fine job and I’m proud of all of them.”
Artwork covered most of the hallways throughout South Granville Medical Center before, during, and after the gallery showing. Family members posed for photos next to their favorite submissions as students proudly pointed out both their creations, and those of their classmates. Likewise, the medical practice’s patients enjoyed the display during office hours.
“As the community’s health partner, Granville Health System is pleased to join Wilton Elementary School in presenting the Kids Living Healthy program,” said L. Lee Isley, Chief Executive Officer for Granville Health System. “This initiative underscores the fact that health, nutrition and fitness should always play important roles in the lives of our students and their families,” Isley continued.
Granville Health System provides quality care to more than 86,000 patients a year and has over 100 experienced physicians representing numerous specialties on its medical staff. The main campus is located at 1010 College Street, Oxford, North Carolina.
