About the Sam Perry Scholarship
The Foundation established the scholarship in honor of Sam Perry, a physician’s assistant (PA), whose specialized medical care earned him deep respect from both patients and peers throughout his career.
The Granville Health System Board of Trustees and Granville Health System Foundation Board support and manage the scholarship in order to promote Sam Perry’s legacy of compassionate care and personal leadership by providing financial help to Granville County residents pursuing an allied health field career.
The scholarship recipients are selected by the Foundation Board using an established criterion.
Sam Perry graduated from the Agricultural Institute of NC State University. He was a field medic in the United States Army while serving a tour of duty in Vietnam. Sam graduated from the Surgical Technician / Surgeon’s Assistant program at NC Memorial Hospital at UNC- Chapel Hill.
For more than 30 years, Sam went on to serve Granville community, working tirelessly to advance Granville Health System’s services and provide medical care with the utmost compassion. His work ethic was exceptional, his leadership essential, his service extraordinary, and his love for his fellow man exemplary.

Jenna Radford, Emma Hicks, and Holly Currin all of Oxford are the recipients of its 13th annual Sam Perry Scholarship Award. Ms. Radford is currently attending Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute and will attend East Tennessee State University in the fall with plans to pursue a career as a nurse practitioner. Ms. Hicks is a graduate of Vance Charter School and will be attending the University of North Carolina at Wilmington to major in nursing with plans to pursue a career as a pediatric nurse. Ms. Currin is a graduate of Oxford Preparatory School, NC School of Science and Math, and Vance-Granville Community College, and will be attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to major in pharmacy with plans to pursue a career as a pharmacist.
Cecily Claiborne and Carmen Moore are the 2022 Sam Perry Scholarship recipients. Cecily graduated from Vance Charter School. She will attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with plans to pursue a career in health care specializing in reproductive endocrinology. Carmen graduated from Falls Lake Academy. She will attend Averett University with plans to pursue a career in physical therapy.
Leah Parrott is the 2021 Sam Perry Scholarship recipient. Leah graduated from Granville Early College High School. She will attend the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with plans to major in nursing with plans to pursue a career in health care.
Renee Boone is the 2020 Sam Perry Scholarship recipient. Renee graduated from South Granville High School. She will attend East Carolina University with plans to double major in nursing with a goal of a career as a nurse practitioner.
