Granville Health System Foundation Awards 2017 Sam Perry Scholarship to Morgan Elizabeth Askew

OXFORD, NC (June 27, 2017) – The Granville Health System Foundation has announced that Morgan Elizabeth Askew of Oxford was awarded the seventh annual Sam Perry Scholarship. Ms. Askew, who is the daughter of Beth and Dean Askew, graduated from Granville Central High School. She will be attending the University of North Carolina in Charlotte beginning fall 2017 to pursue a career in Biomedicine focused on developing prosthetics.

The Foundation established the scholarship fund in memory of Sam Perry, a physician’s assistant (PA) whose specialized medical care earned him deep respect from both patients and peers throughout his career.

“We honor Sam’s vision by providing this scholarship opportunity to exceptional students who seek to pursue a career in the health field,” said Gary Bowman, President of the Granville Health System Foundation.

The Sam Perry Scholarship is awarded to a Granville County resident who has been accepted into a two-year or four-year Allied Health Program at an accredited school and who intends to pursue a career in the allied health care field. Programs eligible for this scholarship include various health-related specialties, including clinical laboratory sciences, physical therapy, occupational therapy, radiological science, pharmacy, RN, BSN, ADN, LPN, dentistry and related careers, physician assistant, and nurse practitioner.

Ms. Askew’s impressive record illustrates the qualities of academic performance, leadership, and community involvement that are sought by the Sam Perry Scholarship selection committee.

Throughout high school, Ms. Askew has immersed herself in various leadership organizations and roles, including National Honor Society, Student Council, College Ambassador, and as a Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership delegate. She graduated with a GPA of 3.78 on a 4.0 scale.

She has been a member of her youth group at church for eight years and participated in mission trips. She has been a teacher at a local Backyard Bible School during the summer months, as well as a high school tutor in mathematics and civics throughout all four years of high school. Since she was 10 years old, Ms. Askew volunteered at the local Church & Community Ministries organization, as well.

“Ms. Askew’s academic success and exceptional extracurricular involvement at Granville Central High School will set her up for success at UNC Charlotte this fall,” said Martha Wrenn of the Sam Perry Scholarship Committee. “We are confident that she has an exciting future ahead of her.”
