Granville Health System Foundation Awards 2019 Sam Perry Scholarship to Emily Grace Wright

The Granville Health System Foundation has announced that Emily Grace Wright of Oxford was awarded the ninth annual Sam Perry Scholarship. Ms. Wright, who is the daughter of Angela and Robbie Wright, graduated from South Granville High School. She will be attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill this fall with plans to major in human biology on a pre-medical track. She intends to pursue a career as a pediatrician.

The Foundation established the scholarship fund in memory of Sam Perry, a physician’s assistant (PA) whose specialized medical care earned him deep respect from both patients and peers throughout his career.

“The Foundation is pleased to honor Sam’s vision and commitment to the community by awarding this scholarship to an exceptional student who is planning to pursue a career in the health field,” said Gary Bowman, President of the Granville Health System Foundation.

The Sam Perry Scholarship is awarded to a Granville County resident who has been accepted into a two-year or four-year Allied Health Program at an accredited school and who intends to pursue a career in the allied health care field. Programs eligible for this scholarship include various health-related specialties, including clinical laboratory sciences, physical therapy, occupational therapy, radiological science, pharmacy, RN, BSN, ADN, LPN, dentistry and related careers, physician assistant, and nurse practitioner.

Ms. Wright’s exceptional academic achievement, leadership and organizational involvement, exemplify the qualities that are sought by the Sam Perry Scholarship selection committee.

Throughout high school, Ms. Wright has immersed herself in various leadership organizations and roles, including National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, South Granville High School Spanish Honor Society, Granville County Student of Merit and Student of Excellence, South Granville High School Student Council, serving as Student Body Vice President this year, Team Captain of volleyball for South Granville High School, Carolina Power Volleyball Club, and Triangle Volleyball Club, South Granville High School Asheboro Leadership Retreat Counselor, South Granville High School Link Crew, and she was a member of Health Occupations Students of America and South Granville High School Relay for Life Team. She graduated with a weighted GPA of 4.63.

Ms. Wright received the Rotary Youth Leadership Award and was the Hugh O’Brian Youth NC East Representative. She has volunteered at Granville Medical Center with the Human Resources Department and Outpatient Surgery Department, as well as the Harold Sherman Adult Day Center. Through her volunteer service with Granville County Senior Services she has delivered and served meals and taught smartphone classes. For her senior project, Ms. Wright collected donations to make gift bags for the teen and young adult cancer unit at UNC Rex and Duke University Medical Centers.

“The Scholarship Committee was impressed by Ms. Wright’s academic achievements, broad list of extracurricular activities and her array of community engagement experience. While all of the applicants were outstanding, Ms. Wright exceeded each criteria we look for in our scholarship award selection,” said Martha Wrenn of the Sam Perry Scholarship Committee. “We know she will be successful as she pursues her dream to be a Pediatrician at UNC Chapel Hill this fall.”
