Granville Health System Foundation Awards 2020 Sam Perry Scholarship to Renee Dawn Boone

Congratulations, Renee Dawn Boone!

The Granville Health System Foundation has announced that Renee Dawn Boone of Creedmoor was awarded the tenth annual Sam Perry Scholarship. Ms. Boone, who is the daughter of Connie & Rodney Boone, graduated from South Granville High School. She will be attending East Carolina University this fall with plans to major in nursing with a goal of a career as a nurse practitioner.

The Foundation established the scholarship fund in memory of Sam Perry, a physician’s assistant (PA) whose specialized medical care earned him deep respect from both patients and peers throughout his career.

“The Foundation is pleased to honor Sam’s vision and commitment to the community by awarding this scholarship to an exceptional student who is planning to pursue a career in the health field,” said Gary Bowman, President of the Granville Health System Foundation.

The Sam Perry Scholarship is awarded to a Granville County resident who has been accepted into a two-year or four-year accredited school and who intends to pursue a career in the health care field. Programs eligible for this scholarship include various health-related specialties, including clinical laboratory sciences, physical therapy, occupational therapy, radiological science, pharmacy, RN, BSN, ADN, LPN, dentistry and related careers, physician assistant, and nurse practitioner.

Ms. Boone’s exceptional academic achievement, leadership and organizational involvement, exemplify the qualities that are sought by the Sam Perry Scholarship selection committee.

Throughout high school, Ms. Boone has immersed herself in various leadership organizations and roles, including serving as captain of the South Granville High School softball team; a Link crew leader; president of the National Honor Society chapter at South Granville High School; president of the senior class and member of the student council; captain of a travel softball team; member of the SGHS HOSA chapter; and counselor for Asheboro Leadership Retreat. Ms. Boone performs volunteer services at Murdoch Developmental Center. She graduated with a weighted GPA of 4.4688 and was ranked #1 in her class.

“The Scholarship Committee was impressed by Ms. Boone’s academic achievements, broad list of extracurricular activities and her array of community engagement experience. While all of the applicants were outstanding, Ms. Boone exceeded each criterion we look for in our scholarship award selection,” said Martha Wrenn of the Sam Perry Scholarship Committee. “We know she will be successful as she pursues her dream to be nurse practitioner.”
