Leah Parrott Receives Sam Perry Scholarship Award From the Granville Health System Foundation

11th Annual Award Recognizes Exceptional Academic Achievement In Pursuit of Career in Health Care.

The Granville Health System Foundation today announced that Leah Parrott of Oxford is the recipient of its 11th annual Sam Perry Scholarship Award. Ms. Parrott, who is the daughter of Tracy and Allison Parrott, is a graduate of Granville Early College High School. She will be attending The University of North Carolina at Charlotte to major in Nursing with plans to pursue a career in health care.

“I am very grateful to receive the Sam Parry Scholarship Award and excited to pursue my career goal to become a Nurse Practitioner or a Physician’s Assistant,” said Ms. Parrott. “As a first step to achieving this goal, I plan to become a Registered Nurse once I graduate from college.”

In 2009, the Granville Health System Foundation established an annual scholarship fund in memory of Sam Perry, a physician’s assistant (PA) whose specialized medical care earned him deep respect from both patients and peers throughout his career.

“The Foundation is pleased to honor Sam’s vision and commitment to the community by awarding this year’s Sam Perry Scholarship Award to Leah Parrott who exemplifies the qualities of leadership, community volunteerism, and academic discipline that will help her realize her dream to be a Physician Assistant,” said Martha Wrenn, President of the Granville Health System Foundation. “The Scholarship Committee was impressed by Leah’s academic achievements, broad list of extracurricular activities, and community engagement experience which exceeded the criterion we look for as part of the Scholarship Award selection.”

The Sam Perry Scholarship is awarded to a Granville County resident who has been accepted into a two-year or four-year accredited school and who intends to pursue a career in the health care field. Programs eligible for this scholarship include various health-related specialties, including clinical laboratory sciences, physical therapy, occupational therapy, radiological science, pharmacy, RN, BSN, ADN, LPN, dentistry and related careers, physician assistant, and nurse practitioner.

Throughout high school, Ms. Parrott immersed herself in many leadership organizations and roles, including serving as Captain of the Granville Central High School Girls Soccer Team, Vice President of the Granville Early College National Honor Society, and member of the Granville Early College Yearbook Club. She graduated from high school with a weighted GPA of 4.6250.

Ms. Parrott is active in the community as a Council Member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church Youth Group, a Volunteer at the Berea Fire Department, and at the Church & Community Ministry (CCM). She has also worked as a Youth Soccer Referee for the Oxford Soccer Club, a Gate Booth Attendance and Fee Collector for NC State Parks, and as a Personal Care Aide.
