GHS Named As One Of The Top 10 US Hospitals
The American Alliance of Healthcare Providers (AAHP) has named Granville Health System (GHS) as one of the top 10 hospitals in the country in their 2011 Hospital of Choice Awards, announced January 24, 2011.
This award recognizes America’s “most customer-friendly hospitals,” according to Ric Vincent Parr, President of AAHP. It is “designed to find America’s most customer-friendly hospitals based either on an extensive application process, or by a review of a facility’s public communication and staff interaction with customers,” according to a press release from the alliance.
Each year AAHCP evaluates approximately 400 hospitals for consideration of this Award. Approximately one hundred hospitals are recognized annually. The application process requires a review of six principal areas of consideration including Standards of Conduct, Performance Management and Improvement, Staff Development and Training, Systems of Communication, Good Citizenship, and Educational and Promotional Material available to consumers.
The Top Ten winners will have an opportunity to compete for the Hospital of the Year Award which will be announced in April 2011. In random order, here is the list of this year’s most successful hospitals in customer service.
- University of Kansas Hospital, Kansas City, KS

The Hospital of Choice Awards celebrate hospitals that go beyond their walls in pursuit of excellence and quality care—organizations that have developed collaborative relationships with not only patients, but with physicians and other health care organizations in the community.
Granville Health System Receives an “A” in Quality and Patient Safety
Granville Health System (GHS) announced the hospital has been awarded an “A” rating in quality and patient safety from The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit organization committed to driving quality, safety, and transparency in the U.S. health care system.
Developed under the guidance of an expert panel, Leapfrog’s Hospital Safety Grade uses 30 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign A, B, C, D and F letter grades to hospitals nationwide. The safety grade is calculated by top patient safety experts and is peer-reviewed. The information is fully transparent and free to the public. Granville Health System is one of the select hospitals, out of more than 2,600 U.S. hospitals, to receive an “A” for its commitment to reducing errors, infections, and accidents that can harm patients.
Specifically, Granville Health System received excellent scores in the areas of infection control, preventing complications from surgery and medication errors, avoiding patient safety issues, ensuring the timely response of hospital staff to patient needs, and communication with patients from both doctors and nurses.
Over the past decade, GHS has established a strong focus on quality and safety, having been recognized through a number of initiatives and collaboratives.
“The safety of our patients and quality of care provided to them is our top priority,” said Richard J. Pacca, M.D., GHS Chief of Medical Staff. “Recognition by organizations like The Leapfrog Group validates not only the hard work and effort of our physicians, nurses and staff; it also showcases the expertise our organization has developed in providing the safest environment possible for patient care.”
In fact, GHS has been identified in the past as subject experts in terms of quality and patient safety. Partnership for Patients, a public-private partnership working to improve the quality, safety and affordability of health care, named GHS as one of the nation’s leaders in preventing infection rates and readmissions. This recognition was based on the work of GHS staff in the prevention of 10 hospital-acquired conditions (HACs) and their low rate of readmissions.
The national leadership team from the Partnership for Patients went on to name GHS as a mentor hospital. The group invited GHS to provide expertise for other hospitals on preventing HACs and readmissions at regional and national events. GHS provided support, advice and clinical knowledge to hospitals seeking to lower their rate of HACs and readmissions through virtual webinars and on-site education sessions.
“Hospitals that earn top marks nationally in the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade have achieved the highest safety standards in the country,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “That takes commitment from every member of the Granville Health System staff, who all deserve thanks and congratulations when their system achieves an ‘A’ Safety Grade.”
About The Leapfrog Group
Founded in 2000 by large employers and other purchasers, The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization driving a movement for giant leaps forward in the quality and safety of American health care. The flagship Leapfrog Hospital Survey collects and transparently reports hospital performance, empowering purchasers to find the highest-value care and giving consumers the lifesaving information they need to make informed decisions. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, Leapfrog’s other main initiative, assigns letter grades to hospitals based on their record of patient safety, helping consumers protect themselves and their families from errors, injuries, accidents, and infections.
